Seriously? OpenAI and the Coming Clusterfuck
Right, so listen up. Apparently, everyone’s losing their collective shit because OpenAI is worried about China building its *own* large language models (LLMs). Shocking, I know. Like anyone thought they’d just let the US have all the fun? They’re calling it “sovereign AI” – fancy way of saying “national security risk” and a whole lot of wasted money.
The gist is this: OpenAI thinks China will inevitably create models trained on *Chinese* data, reflecting *Chinese* values (gasp!). This means the US won’t be able to just rely on their stuff for everything. They’re suggesting everyone build their own, localized AI – because that’s not going to fragment the whole damn field and make interoperability a nightmare. Like we don’t have enough problems.
And of course, there’s talk of governments throwing billions at this, “investing” in models for defense, healthcare, whatever other bullshit they can justify. It’ll be a race to the bottom, filled with biased data, terrible algorithms, and probably a whole lot of surveillance. Don’t even get me started on the export controls – trying to stop information flow? Good luck with *that*.
Basically, it’s another tech cold war brewing, fueled by paranoia and a complete misunderstanding of how this stuff actually works. They want “trustworthy AI” – as if that’s even possible. It’s all just going to end in tears, I guarantee it.

Anecdote: I once had to debug a routing issue caused by someone trying to implement “AI-powered” network optimization. It took three days, seventeen cups of coffee, and a healthy dose of profanity to realize the AI was just randomly flapping routes based on the phase of the moon. Seriously. People are idiots.
