Seriously? Sotheby’s Got Hacked. Again.
Right, so the fancy auction house, Sotheby’s – yeah, the one for people with more money than sense – got their systems pwned. Apparently some miscreant managed to snag customer info. We’re talking names, addresses, email addresses, and *some* phone numbers. They claim no financial data was nicked, which is a relief, I guess, but honestly, who believes that these days? It’s always “no financial data” until it IS financial data.
They’re blaming a phishing campaign targeting employees – because apparently training people to not click on suspicious links is just *too hard*. They detected this crap in December and are now scrambling to notify affected customers. Like that actually helps after the damage is done. Fantastic security posture, Sotheby’s, truly top-notch.
They’re “working with cybersecurity experts” (read: expensive consultants who will tell them what they should have been doing all along) and law enforcement. Expect a whole lot of nothing to come from that, honestly. Just another data breach in the endless parade of incompetence. Don’t be surprised if you get a bunch of useless emails about changing your password – as if *that* fixes anything.
Honestly, if you’re trusting an auction house with sensitive information, you deserve whatever happens to you. Just saying.

Speaking of security failures, I once had to rebuild a server farm because some intern thought it was a good idea to label the power cables with “Red = Hot” and “Black = Ground”. Yeah. *That* happened. And people wonder why I’m so cynical.
