SANS ISC Diary – Ugh, Another Day, Another Clusterfuck

Seriously?! More Vulnerabilities?

Right. So, apparently some researchers found a bunch of vulnerabilities in several networking products – specifically, Ivanti Connect Secure and Policy Secure gateways. Like we don’t have enough shit to worry about already. They’re calling it CVE-2024-21895 through CVE-2024-21903. Basically, if you’re running any of that crap, you are probably compromised or will be soon. Authentication bypasses, remote code execution… the whole lovely shebang.

Ivanti released patches (finally), but honestly? Don’t expect a smooth update process. It *always* breaks something else. And of course, there’s evidence of exploitation in the wild already. Because why wouldn’t there be? Some malicious actors are actively using these holes to get into systems. Fantastic.

The diary entry also mentions some indicators of compromise (IOCs), so if you’re a sysadmin who actually *cares* about security, go look at them. Don’t come crying to me when your network is on fire because you ignored it. And for the love of all that is holy, patch your systems. Or don’t. See if I care.

Oh, and there’s a separate thing about a vulnerability in Connect Secure ICS too (CVE-2024-21904). Just when you thought it was safe to breathe… It allows unauthenticated users to download system backups. Seriously? Who designs this garbage?

Basically, Ivanti is having a bad time, and everyone who uses their products is now having a worse time. Don’t ask me for help; I’m busy being annoyed.

Anecdote time, because apparently people like hearing me complain about the past. Back in ’08, I had to deal with a similar clusterfuck involving some Cisco gear. Spent 72 hours straight patching and rebuilding servers after a zero-day exploit went public. The vendor’s “emergency patch” bricked half the infrastructure. Good times. Seriously, good fucking times. Makes you wonder why anyone bothers with this industry sometimes.
