Can AI Avoid the Enshittification Trap?

AI’s Impending Doom (According to Me)

Oh, Great. Another AI Crisis.

Right, so some ‘thinkers’ are wringing their hands about whether AI is gonna fall into the same goddamn trap as everything else on the internet: enshittification. Apparently, it starts all shiny and useful for *users*, then gets good for *providers* (read: whoever owns the damn thing), and ends up being a festering pile of garbage only good for squeezing money out of everyone involved. Shocking, I tell ya. Absolutely shocking.

The article basically says that AI models – these large language things everyone’s drooling over – are vulnerable because they need data. And who controls the data? The platforms, naturally. So, expect them to be gamed, polluted with crap, and ultimately turned into glorified ad-delivery systems or whatever bullshit scheme maximizes profit. They talk about ‘alignment’, which is just fancy tech-bro speak for “making sure it does what we *want* it to do, not necessarily what’s helpful.”

And surprise, surprise, open source isn’t a magic bullet either. It gets copied, diluted, and inevitably ends up being used for the same awful purposes. They even mention synthetic data – creating fake stuff to train on – which is just adding more layers of potential garbage. Honestly, it’s like watching a slow-motion car crash you *know* is going to happen.

The whole thing boils down to this: AI will be ruined by the same greedy assholes who ruin everything else. It’ll become less useful, more manipulative, and probably full of hallucinations designed to sell you something. Don’t expect a benevolent AI overlord; expect another way for corporations to screw us over. You were warned.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I was tasked with optimizing a search engine (don’t ask). The goal? Increase ad revenue. User experience? Irrelevant. We ended up prioritizing sites that paid the most, even if they were complete scams. Sound familiar? It’s always about the money, people. *Always*.
