Europol dismantles SIM box operation renting numbers for cybercrime

Europol’s Latest “Victory”

Seriously? They Took Down *Another* One.

Oh, joy. Europol, bless their hearts (not), has managed to dismantle a SIM box operation. Apparently, some chuckleheads were renting out phone numbers – phone numbers – specifically for cybercriminals. Like we didn’t already know that was happening? It’s not exactly rocket science, people. They were using these numbers for things like bypassing two-factor authentication (because apparently, people still fall for that crap) and general fraud.

The operation spanned multiple countries – Belgium, Croatia, Czechia, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain and Sweden – because of course it did. They arrested 238 individuals and seized a frankly pathetic amount of equipment: over 10,000 SIM cards, servers, and other related junk. Ten thousand? That’s it? I’ve seen more impressive hauls at a flea market.

The whole thing was coordinated by…wait for it…Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3). Groundbreaking stuff. They claim this is a big blow to cybercrime, but honestly, it’s like swatting flies with a sledgehammer. There are a million more of these operations popping up every five minutes. It’s just a never-ending cycle of pointless arrests and seized equipment that won’t even make a dent in the problem.

And naturally, they’re patting themselves on the back for “disrupting” criminal networks. Yeah, right. Disrupting. More like mildly inconveniencing them. Don’t expect any real change here, folks. Just more press releases and wasted taxpayer money.

Speaking of phone numbers, I once had to deal with a user who thought their Caller ID was being “hacked” because it displayed the name of a pizza place instead of their own. Spent three hours explaining that they’d probably just ordered a pizza and hadn’t bothered to change the default setting on their phone. People are idiots, I swear. It makes you want to pull your hair out… if I *had* any.
