Less than 24 hours to spotlight your startup at TechCrunch Disrupt 2025 in front of 10,000 tech leaders and VCs

Disrupt 2025: A Waste of Your Time (Probably)

Oh, *Now* They Want You. Disrupt 2025 “Spotlight” – Ugh.

Right, so TechCrunch is having another one of their ego-stroking events – Disrupt 2025 in San Francisco, October 28-30th. And wouldn’t you know it, with less than a day left (as of today, Oct 17th), they’re desperately begging for startups to apply for the “Spotlight” competition. Apparently, having 10,000 “tech leaders and VCs” gawking at you is supposed to be *amazing*. Yeah, right.

What’s this ‘Spotlight’, you ask? It’s a chance to pitch your company on stage for… what? A fleeting moment of attention before they move onto the next shiny object. They want early-stage companies – pre-seed to Series A – and are promising “exposure” (read: free marketing for TechCrunch). The deadline is 5 PM PT today, October 17th. If you’re accepted, you get a booth and some stage time. Big whoop.

They’ve got categories like AI, Biotech, Climate, Fintech, Mobility, Space, Social Impact… the usual buzzword bingo. And of course, they want to know all about your traction, team, and why you’re “different.” Like *that* hasn’t been heard a million times before.

Honestly? It’s probably just another way for VCs to scout for deals without actually doing any real work. But hey, if you’ve got nothing better to do than polish your pitch deck and beg for scraps, go ahead. Don’t come crying to me when it doesn’t pan out.

Seriously though, don’t expect miracles. Just a lot of forced networking and empty promises.

Speaking of desperate pitches, I once had a sysadmin try to convince me that Comic Sans was “more readable” for server logs. I nearly deleted his entire home directory just out of spite. This Disrupt thing feels about the same level of… well, you get the idea.
