VMware Certification: Your Next Career Power Move

VMware Certifications: A Waste of Your Time (Probably)

Oh, *Great*. More Certifications.

Right, so VMware wants you to throw more money at them for pieces of paper that might get you a job. This article basically says if you’re in the virtualization/cloud space – and let’s be honest, who isn’t these days? – getting one of their certifications could “boost your career.” Yeah, right. Like employers actually *care* about vendor-specific fluff when they can just test your skills with a real interview.

They’re pushing the VCP (VMware Certified Professional) as entry-level, then the VCIX (VMware Certified Implementation Expert) if you want to prove you can… what? Spend even *more* time and cash on their ecosystem? They’ve revamped the whole thing, made it “cloud-focused” because everything has to be cloud-focused now. Surprise. There’s a new “Foundational” exam too, for people who don’t know which way is up. Fantastic.

Apparently, demand for VMware skills is high (shocking), so they’re capitalizing on it with these certifications. It’s all about making *them* more money, not necessarily you more employable. They even mention salary increases… as if a piece of plastic guarantees a raise. Don’t fall for that bullshit.

Honestly, learn the damn technology, build some labs, contribute to open source, and maybe – just *maybe* – someone will hire you. But no, spend three grand on a VCIX. That’s the ticket. Ugh.

And a Story For Ya…

I once had a sysadmin come to me, waving his freshly printed VCP like it was the Holy Grail. Asked for a promotion. I asked him to troubleshoot a simple DNS issue. He… couldn’t. Spent two hours Googling before admitting defeat. The paper meant absolutely nothing. *Nothing*. So yeah, take that certification with a grain of salt – and maybe a whole shaker of skepticism.
