ASUS warns of critical auth bypass flaw in DSL series routers

ASUS Router Clusterfuck: Critical Auth Bypass May Let Hackers Wreck Your Internet Life

Oh, brilliant — another day, another shitty router vulnerability. This time it’s ASUS screwing the pooch with a big, fat security hole in their DSL series routers. Apparently, there’s a critical authentication bypass flaw that lets some random script-kiddie wander into your router’s admin panel like it’s a goddamn open bar. Hackers don’t even have to log in — they just slide right past the door while your router politely asks if they’d like a drink.

ASUS finally got around to admitting the fustercluck, telling users that several DSL models — including DSL-N10_C1, DSL-N10_D1, DSL-N12E_C1, DSL-N16, and DSL-N17U — are vulnerable. The issue even earned a CVSS score of 9.8 out of a possible 10, which basically means “holy shit, patch this now before someone uses your Wi-Fi for their illegal crypto farm.”

They’ve puked out some firmware updates for the affected models, but of course it’s up to you to go hunting around on their website like some kind of digital Indiana Jones just to fix their mistake. If your router’s too old or unsupported, ASUS’s advice amounts to “tough shit, buy a new one.” Fantastic customer service, as always.

So yeah, if you’re running one of these routers, unplug your dumb DSL toaster and update that firmware immediately. Because nothing screams “bad day” like realizing your home network’s been turned into a botnet node run by some Russian teenager in his mom’s basement.

Anecdote: Reminds me of the time some genius user plugged an unpatched router straight into the company network, instantly birthing a malware outbreak that fried half the printers. The best part? They swore it was “just for better Wi-Fi in the lunchroom.” I swear, I keep a flamethrower on standby for days like that.
