Europe Is Bending the Knee to the US on Tech Policy

Europe’s Tech Balls Officially Handed to the US

So apparently, Europe’s glorious dream of being the moral compass of the digital universe just took a flaming swan dive straight into Uncle Sam’s pocket. The EU — champion of privacy, fairness, and bureaucratic wankery — has spent years puffing up its chest about “digital sovereignty.” And what do they do? They bloody well roll over and let Washington tickle their belly like a good obedient lapdog. Bravo, Europe, bloody bravo.

Let me break it down for you in short, swear-laden bursts. The European Union spent forever crafting their shiny new AI Act — supposed to be the gold standard for keeping tech companies in check. But the second the US starts flexing its “innovation” muscles (translation: money, power, and Silicon Valley lobbyists armed with overpriced PowerPoints), the EU suddenly decides maybe it doesn’t want to piss off the Americans after all. Because who needs regulatory spine when you’ve got trade deals and tech investments to worry about, right?

So now the AI Act — supposedly about ethics, human rights, and stopping the robot apocalypse — looks more like a neutered compliance document blessed by Google and pals. The same US titans that the EU was supposed to be “regulating” are now whispering in Brussels’ ear like a sleazy ex promising “baby, I’ve changed.” Oh sure, and I suppose Facebook’s mission statement isn’t “profit through surveillance” anymore either. Pull the other one, it’s got a microchip on it.

Bottom line: Europe’s digital big talk just turned into digital bootlicking. They’ve basically gone from shouting “We’ll protect our citizens!” to mumbling “Please, sir, may I have another API?” The Americans get to do what they want, the EU gets to pretend it’s still in control, and the rest of us get stuck with whatever flaming policy Frankenstein comes out the other end. Bloody perfect.

Reminds me of the time I let some junior admin handle the firewall rules because he said he “knew what he was doing.” Five minutes later, the network was broadcasting to half of Eastern Europe and I was explaining to Legal why our mail server thought it was in Minsk. Moral of the story: never let amateurs or politicians touch things they don’t understand — like firewalls, AI policy, or their own supposed authority.
