‘Dark LLMs’ Aid Petty Criminals, But Underwhelm Technically

Dark LLMs: When Script Kiddies Play Hacker With AI and Still Manage to Screw It Up

Oh, bloody fantastic. Just when you think humanity’s collective brain cell count couldn’t sink any lower, along come the “Dark LLMs.” Yeah, that’s right — Large Language Models for the criminally stupid, basically ChatGPT’s shady cousins playing in the digital gutter. Supposedly these bootleg AIs are helping wannabe cybercriminals pull off scams, phish people, and do other sketchy shit. Except — surprise, surprise — they’re about as competent as a goldfish with a calculator.

According to the geniuses over at Dark Reading, these black-market “evil AIs” are all the rage among petty crooks who think paying a few bucks for a janky chatbot will turn them into the next Bond villain. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. The dirty little secret? These things are crap. Bad training, half-baked data, and outputs so hilariously wrong they’re basically self-sabotage in digital form. One of them probably thinks SQL Injection is a new energy drink.

The crooks, poor sods, are wasting time and money on these bargain-bin “LLMs” that can barely string a viable phishing email together without bursting into incoherent drivel. Meanwhile, real security pros are laughing their collective asses off because these dumbass tools are so bad they actually make defenders’ jobs easier. It’s like watching toddlers try to hotwire a car with a banana. Cute, but only if you’ve got the stomach for secondhand embarrassment.

So yeah, the cyber-underground is all excited about these low-rent AI helpers, but realistically they’re more of a nuisance than a threat — a fart in the server room, mildly unpleasant but ultimately inconsequential. If this is the apex of “AI-powered cybercrime,” then we’re safe for another decade or two, at least until one of them figures out how to copy-paste without bricking the system.

Reminds me of the time some intern thought they could “automate” password resets with a half-finished Python script they grabbed from a Reddit thread. Locked out half the department, crashed the AD server, and blamed it on “AI enhancements.” Yeah. Enhancements. Sure, kid.
