Some French AI Startup Just Got $70 Million to Talk Fancy
Well, apparently the money gods have decided to rain down cash on yet another shiny AI startup. This time it’s some Paris-based mob called Gradium, who’ve somehow convinced investors to toss them a bloody $70 million SEED round — yes, SEED, as in “we haven’t even burned through the first pot of money yet, but sure, here’s a truckload more.”
Their big idea? Making AI voices sound more “human.” Because obviously, the world was suffering from a critical shortage of vaguely human-sounding chatbots. The founders are bragging about some “next-level generative model” that makes computers talk like us poor bastards, without the usual robotic drone. Great. Exactly what we needed — more machines pretending to understand us so they can scam us better.
The investor lineup is full of the usual suspects — all those flashy VC firms who throw cash at anything with “AI” in the pitch deck faster than pigeons on breadcrumbs. They’re betting this crew from Paris will somehow revolutionize how we “interact with digital voices.” Which is Silicon Valley-speak for “we’ll milk this for a few years, then sell it to Google.”
Gradium’s founders are, of course, “thrilled” and “humbled.” Yeah, humbled with seventy million reasons to smile — while the rest of us are still trying to get ChatGPT to stop calling us “user.” The company plans to expand, hire more “AI scientists,” and *disrupt the voice industry*. Translation: burn cash, host some conferences, and pray the hype lasts long enough for the next funding round.
So, to sum up: another overhyped AI voice startup with a metric shit-ton of funding, a lot of buzzwords, and one very expensive French accent. Lovely.

Reminds me of that one time a manager asked me to “personify our internal systems to increase engagement.” So I programmed the printer to shout “YOU AGAIN?” every time it jammed. They didn’t ask again.
