Google expands Android scam protection feature to Chase, Cash App in U.S.

Google Expands Scam Protection – Because People Still Keep Falling For the Same Bloody Tricks

So apparently, Google’s decided to do something *useful* for once instead of setting fire to their messaging apps yet again. Their fancy-pants “Scam Protection” system on Android – you know, the one that tries to stop you from handing your entire bank balance to “Prince Nigerian McPhishface” – is being expanded. About bloody time too.

They’ve now added support for Chase and Cash App users in the U.S., meaning the poor sods using those apps might get a friendly “Oi, you sure about this?” pop-up before funneling their life savings to some scammer sitting in a basement somewhere. The feature uses on-device AI – yeah, supposedly all private and secure, like that’s ever gone wrong before – to analyze potential scam calls in real time. Basically, your phone listens in and goes: “Uh oh, this sounds dodgier than a $5 Rolex,” and gives you a warning.

So, Google flexes its smug little AI muscles again, saying they’ll protect us from “social engineering fraud.” Which is corporate speak for “you answering a suspicious call and giving away your entire soul because someone said they’re from ‘your bank.’” Of course, as with all shiny crap like this, it’s only rolling out to certain devices and countries at first – because apparently stopping people from losing money worldwide isn’t profitable enough yet.

Anyway, the gist: Google’s letting its scam alert babysit Chase and Cash App users, so maybe—MAYBE—we’ll get fewer sob stories about people losing their rent money to fake tech support “agents.” Naturally, scammers will still find a way around it, because that’s what they do. But hey, at least Google gets another PR headline to look like the hero while harvesting even more data.

Signoff: Reminds me of the time some idiot clicked a link titled “Free iPhone 15 Giveaway” on the office Wi-Fi and bricked the whole damn network. I had to “fix” it by pulling the plug and blaming the intern. Works every time.
