Rogue NuGet Package Poses as Tracer.Fody, Steals Cryptocurrency Wallet Data
Oh for fuck’s sake, another week, another bunch of idiots falling for a malicious software package with all the subtlety of a drunken elephant in a minefield. This time it’s some rogue piece of digital refuse on NuGet pretending to be Tracer.Fody—because apparently, even malicious bastards know developers are lazy enough to trust something that looks legit if you squint hard enough.
The fraudulent package, named “Tracers.Fody” (note the sneaky plural, because apparently spelling is now a security risk), was uploaded to the official NuGet repository and basically decided it wanted to play crypto bandit. It joyfully yoinked stuff like cryptocurrency wallet info and other personal goodies from developers too distracted by their own caffeine addiction to check a package’s source.
The malware uses an obfuscated PowerShell payload that fetches a second-stage stinker from some shady online bucket, and before you can say “What’s this doing in my dependencies?”, it’s looting your data faster than a script kiddie at a free Wi-Fi convention.
Microsoft did their best “Oh dear, how unfortunate” routine, promptly yanking the package once the damage was already done. Security researchers, being the digital janitors of our time, cleaned up the mess and warned everyone — again — to double-check package names and maintainers before installing random crap off the internet. But do people listen? Hell no. Same cycle, different day, another mugged dev.
Moral of the story? Don’t blindly trust package managers to do what your brain should’ve done first — verify what the hell you’re installing. Otherwise, you’re basically holding your wallet open and saying “Take it, you magnificent bastard!”

Reminds me of the time some intern thought ‘sudo curl | bash’ was a great way to install things. Let’s just say the only thing that got installed that day was a full-blown security incident and my undying hatred for human stupidity.
