Governor Hochul Signs the RAISE Act — Because Apparently We Needed More Red Tape for AI
Well, would you look at that. New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s gone and done it — she’s signed the so-called RAISE Act, a piece of legislative brilliance supposedly designed to “regulate AI safety” and “protect citizens.” Yeah, because what the world *definitely* needed was another goddamn law written by people who think a neural network is something you catch fish with.
According to this steaming heap of bureaucratic optimism, the Act sets up a shiny new AI oversight office. Great. Another expensive department full of people who’ll spend all day writing memos about “algorithmic transparency” while struggling to reset their own passwords. The bill’s supposed to make AI systems “safer and fairer,” which really means it’ll take ten times longer and cost fifty times more to build anything that actually works. Lovely.
Apparently, developers will now have to report how their AI makes decisions, test it for bias, and ensure it doesn’t go rogue and start shorting the stock market or deepfaking someone’s cat. Because, sure, government oversight has *always* been known for its lightning-fast efficiency and deep technical insight. Bloody marvellous.
Meanwhile, tech companies are politely pretending to support it — which is corporate code for “we’re lawyering up and waiting for the first loophole the size of Manhattan.” Every PR exec is out there nodding and smiling while quietly updating their “Innovation Moved to Texas” PowerPoint.
In short: The government’s worried AI’s going to nuke humanity, so they’re forming a committee. Perfect. Because that’s definitely how you stop Skynet — with paperwork and an ethics subcommittee. Jesus wept.

Reminds me of that time some bright spark in IT thought “multi-factor authentication” meant sending me a fax for approval. I told him my second factor was “fuck off.” He didn’t send another fax.
