Microsoft releases Windows 10 KB5073724 extended security update

Microsoft’s Latest Windows 10 “Don’t Die Yet” Patch – AKA KB5073724

Oh look, Microsoft’s back again like that zombie ex who just won’t stay buried, this time dragging an “Extended Security Update” for poor old Windows 10. Yep, the KB5073724 patch just dropped, which is basically Redmond saying, “Fine, you cheap bastards who didn’t want to upgrade to Windows 11, here’s your digital life support system.”

This little bundle of joy, also called the July 2024 ESU Preview Update, fixes security holes that could let every two-bit hacker waltz into your system like it’s an open bar. It’s for those “enthusiastic” folks still clinging to Windows 10 versions 22H2 and 21H2 like it’s a beloved pet goldfish that died three years ago but you just can’t flush it yet. Oh, and if you didn’t pay for the ESU program? Tough luck, no patchy security hugs for you. Better start praying your antivirus actually does something for once.

The update also does the usual mysterious “improvements and fixes” — that’s Microsoft-speak for “we fixed some crap we broke two updates ago, and probably broke something else you’ll find later.” And naturally, it’s delivered through Windows Update, WSUS, or you can dig it out of the Microsoft Update Catalog if you enjoy pain and bad decisions.

So yeah, this is Microsoft keeping your obsolete OS on ventilator support while screaming “UPGRADE ALREADY YOU LAZY SODS!” from the server room. But I get it — change is hard, and Windows 11’s UI looks like it was designed by someone who’s never used a computer sober.

Reminds me of the time I patched a server for “critical stability improvements” and it promptly shat itself so hard it took out half the department’s printers. I laughed, they cried — balance restored.
