EU mandates Google open Android and search data to AI rivals

EU Tells Google to Open the Damn Gates

Right, here we go. The EU has decided that Google’s been sitting on a nice fat pile of Android and search data like some smug dragon hoarding gold, and now it wants that hoard cracked open for AI rivals. Because apparently, if you’ve got the data, you’ve got the power, and Google has been clutching both with its usual “trust us, we’re being responsible” corporate bullshit.

The article explains that under the EU’s lovely little regulatory cudgel, Google may be forced to give competitors access to key Android features and piles of search-related data so smaller AI firms can build systems without having to crawl the internet with a spoon and a prayer. In other words, Brussels is trying to stop the usual tech giant routine: build the platform, lock everyone else out, then act offended when regulators call it anti-competitive as fuck.

The main issue is that AI needs data, lots of it, and not the half-rotten scraps normal companies can scrape together. Google has Android, search, user behavior, and enough ecosystem reach to make rivals look like kids building a server out of cardboard and spite. The EU’s view seems to be that if Google keeps all that to itself, nobody else has a fair shot, and the market turns into the same monopolistic shitshow we’ve seen before.

Of course, Google’s position is more or less what you’d expect: opening things up could create security, privacy, and innovation risks, which is corporate for “we really liked being the only bastards with the keys.” And to be fair, once bureaucrats start forcing data-sharing, there’s always the chance they’ll create a compliance swamp so deep that everyone ends up miserable. Still, the EU clearly thinks that’s preferable to letting Google keep squeezing the AI market until nothing else can breathe.

The broader point of the article is that this isn’t just about one company being told to share its toys. It’s about the next phase of the AI arms race, where data access matters just as much as models and compute. If regulators don’t intervene, the biggest tech firms get even bigger, and everyone else gets to enjoy the exciting freedom of being crushed under platform dependency. Splendid.

So the short version? The EU is telling Google to stop acting like Android and search data are sacred relics bestowed by the gods and start letting rivals in. Whether that leads to healthy competition or just a fresh layer of bureaucratic nonsense remains to be seen, but either way Google’s not going to enjoy it one fucking bit.

I was once called in because a department hoarded printer access controls like they were nuclear launch codes. After five minutes of their sanctimonious drivel, I gave everyone access, the printer jammed itself to death under a flood of pointless color spreadsheets, and suddenly management discovered “shared governance.” Funny how fairness becomes urgent only after the smug bastards lose exclusive control.
