Data Centers Might Get Their Power Yanked So the Rest of the Grid Doesn’t Go to Shit
Well, what a surprise: the largest U.S. power grid has figured out that stuffing the landscape with power-hungry data centers might, in fact, cause problems. PJM Interconnection — the poor bastards running the grid for a huge chunk of the eastern U.S. — is apparently considering plans to let utilities temporarily cut power to data centers during emergencies so the whole damn system doesn’t face rolling blackouts.
The basic idea is brutally simple: when demand spikes and the grid starts wheezing like an overworked server rack in a dust-filled closet, data centers could be told to power down or reduce usage for a bit. Why? Because it’s apparently better to annoy Big Tech for a few hours than let millions of people lose electricity altogether. Shocking, I know.
This is happening because data centers — especially the AI-flavored monster facilities everybody keeps building like there’s no tomorrow — suck down obscene amounts of electricity. Utilities and grid operators are now staring at load forecasts that look less like careful planning and more like a kid scribbling “MORE POWER” in crayon. The demand is rising so fast that the grid’s reliability is starting to look a little bloody fragile.
So now the geniuses are discussing “temporary curtailments,” which is the polite industry term for “we might flip the damn switch on your server farm before the whole grid falls over.” Data centers, in theory, are decent targets for this because some workloads can be shifted, delayed, or rerouted. It’s a lot easier to inconvenience cloud customers than explain to an entire region why their air conditioning, hospitals, and homes are suddenly offline in the middle of a heat wave.
Of course, this also exposes the bigger mess: everyone’s been racing to build AI infrastructure, cloud capacity, and hyperscale campuses without the power system keeping pace. Generation takes time. Transmission takes time. Permits take time. But shoving more racks full of GPU-powered space heaters onto the grid? Apparently that happens right fucking now.
The article points out that this kind of arrangement could become one more tool to avoid broader blackouts as demand keeps climbing. In other words, data centers may be asked to act like interruptible industrial loads — fancy wording for “congratulations, your business model now includes getting kicked in the teeth when the grid is stressed.”
And really, this is the logical endpoint of pretending electricity is some magical infinite resource that appears because a tech executive says “AI” often enough. The grid doesn’t care about your valuation, your product roadmap, or your smug keynote presentation. If supply can’t meet demand, somebody gets cut off, and now it might be the server barns first. Boo-fucking-hoo.
Anecdote time: years ago, I watched a manager insist we could add “just one more” rack to an already overloaded UPS because, and I quote, “it’ll probably be fine.” Ten minutes later, the room went dark, alarms screamed, and he learned the difference between “probably” and “definitely fucked.” Same principle here, just scaled up to an entire grid.
