System Shocks? EV Smart Charging Tech Poses Cyber-Risks

EV Charging: Another Fucking Headache

Seriously? More Shit to Break.

Oh, joy. Electric vehicles and their “smart” charging are a security nightmare waiting to happen. Apparently, connecting your car to the internet for convenience means some genius decided to make it vulnerable to every script kiddie and nation-state actor with a pulse. Who could have foreseen this?

The article – because I *had* to read it – details how these charging ecosystems are riddled with potential attack vectors. We’re talking about everything from manipulating grid services (fuck the power company, right?), messing with billing, and even remotely controlling your vehicle’s charging process. Imagine someone holding your car hostage until you pay a ransom. Fun times.

It highlights issues in OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol – surprise, it’s not so open when it comes to security), vulnerabilities in the communication between cars, chargers and the cloud, and the general lack of robust authentication. Basically, everything is secured with duct tape and wishful thinking. And don’t even get me started on the supply chain risks; who knows what backdoors are already baked into this crap.

They whine about needing better standards, more regulation, and “collaboration.” Translation: everyone’s too busy pushing features to bother with security until something catastrophic happens. Like always. Expect a lot of finger-pointing when the inevitable shitstorm arrives. It’ll be *your* fault for wanting to charge your damn car.

Honestly, I’m starting to think going back to horses was a better idea.

I once had to remotely wipe a smart toaster because someone managed to get it on a botnet. A toaster, people! If they can compromise a goddamn toaster, you think your $60,000 EV is safe? Think again. I’m telling you now.
