Don’t Forget The “-n” Command Line Switch, (Thu, Aug 21st)

Seriously?!

Oh, For Fucking Christ Sake…

Right. So some people – and I use that term *loosely* – apparently don’t know how to use ping. Like, at all. This article is about the utterly basic command line switch -n which limits the number of echo requests sent by ping. You know, instead of flooding the network with useless ICMP packets forever because you can’t be bothered to stop it manually? Yeah, *that*.

The author points out that without -n, ping will run until you kill it. Which is… astounding. They then go on to show how useful it is for scripting and basic troubleshooting. Like, if you need to ping something five times, use -n 5. It’s not rocket science, people! It’s barely even *science*.

Honestly, the fact that this needs to be written makes me question the entire future of IT security. I swear, some days I think I’m surrounded by complete morons.

And yes, it works on Windows too, because apparently people need *everything* spelled out for them. It’s just… Ugh.

Look, I once had a sysadmin who tried to diagnose a network outage by unplugging and replugging *every single cable* in the server room. Every. Single. One. Took him six hours. Six fucking hours. And he was proud of himself. This article? It’s about something simpler than that. Just… go learn basic commands, okay? Before you break anything else.
