OpenAI Is Shoving Ads Into ChatGPT in India, Because Apparently Money Isn’t Enough
So here’s the latest pile of corporate horseshit: OpenAI is going to start showing ads on ChatGPT’s Free and Go tiers in India. Because of course they are. If you thought “AI assistant” meant “helpful tool,” silly you — it also means “billboard with a typing animation.”
The basic gist is this: users in India on the free plan and the cheaper Go tier are going to start seeing ads inside ChatGPT. OpenAI says this is part of figuring out how to monetize its massive user base in one of its biggest growth markets. Translation: loads of people are using it, and somebody in a suit decided they weren’t being milked hard enough yet.
India matters because it’s a huge market for ChatGPT, with a massive number of users and plenty of growth potential. So naturally, instead of just celebrating that, the geniuses decided to wedge advertising into the experience. You know, the same way every decent service eventually gets dragged into the swamp by revenue targets and MBA brain rot.
Apparently, paid subscribers on higher tiers won’t get this ad-infested treatment, which is the usual “if you’re poor, enjoy more crap” model the tech industry fucking loves. Free users get the ads, budget users get the ads, and premium users get to float above it all in their clean little subscription heaven. Ain’t capitalism beautiful?
This move also signals something bigger: OpenAI is under pressure to turn popularity into actual cash without relying only on subscriptions. Training and running these AI systems costs a shitload, investors want returns, and “we’re changing the world” only buys you so much time before somebody demands a spreadsheet full of revenue. So here come the ads, marching in like cockroaches through the kitchen.
The article frames India as a testing ground for this strategy, which makes perfect sense in the most irritating possible way. Start with a price-sensitive, high-growth market, see what users will tolerate, then maybe spread the mess elsewhere if nobody riots hard enough. That’s how this crap usually works: pilot the annoyance, normalize the annoyance, scale the annoyance.
To be fair — and I hate being fair — this isn’t exactly shocking. AI companies burn money like a server room fire in August, and somebody was always going to try stuffing ads into the chatbot. The only surprise is that it took this long. Once you offer a free tier at scale, eventually some bastard in finance asks, “Can we monetize the eyeballs?” and everyone else nods like they’ve discovered fire.
So the takeaway is simple: ChatGPT in India is becoming yet another “free” internet product where your attention gets harvested, chopped up, and sold back to advertisers. Free and Go users get to enjoy the future of AI with a side order of promotional sludge. Progress, my arse.
I’m reminded of the time a manager demanded we put motivational posters in the server room to “improve morale.” I replaced them with printer error messages and nobody noticed for three fucking months. That, dear reader, is the level of executive brilliance we’re dealing with here. Cheers,
