Phishing Campaign Uses UpCrypter in Fake Voicemail Emails to Deliver RAT Payloads

Ugh, Another Phishing Thing

Seriously? *Another* Phishing Scam.

Right, listen up, you lot. Some clowns are sending out phishing emails pretending to be voicemail notifications. Groundbreaking stuff, I know. But here’s the kicker: they’re using this godforsaken file-sharing service called UpCrypter to deliver Remote Access Trojans (RATs). Specifically, it looks like they’re pushing a nasty piece of kit that lets them control your machine after you download the “voicemail”.

The emails are targeting… well, *people*, mostly. The usual suspects – convincing enough subject lines and whatnot to get idiots to click things. They’ve been spotted using legitimate-looking branding, making it harder for even moderately tech-savvy users to spot the scam.

What makes this particularly irritating is they’re abusing UpCrypter, a perfectly good service being used for malicious purposes. It’s not *the* service’s fault, but still. And of course, once you download that file? You’ve basically handed over the keys to your digital kingdom. They can steal data, install more malware, whatever their grubby little hearts desire.

The advice is the same as it always is: DON’T CLICK RANDOM LINKS IN EMAILS. Especially if they claim to be voicemails you weren’t expecting. Use your brain, people! And for fuck’s sake, keep your antivirus software updated. It might actually help this time.

Honestly, I’m starting to think humanity deserves whatever it gets.

Speaking of idiots, I once had a user call the helpdesk because they downloaded a file named “FreeMoney.exe”. Free Money. I swear, some people are actively trying to get hacked. It’s exhausting.
