Microsoft: KB5120998 mouse reset bug affects only non-English PCs

Microsoft Breaks Mouse Settings Again, Because Of Course They Fucking Did

Microsoft has graciously gifted Windows 11 users yet another stupid little disaster: update KB5120998 can reset mouse settings, because apparently quality control was off having a long lunch. The bug messes with things like mouse speed and custom pointer settings after the update installs, which is exactly the sort of irritating shit that makes people want to throw hardware out the window.

Now here’s the especially absurd part: Microsoft says this bug only affects non-English language PCs. So if your system isn’t set up in English, congratulations, you’ve been selected for this week’s premium Microsoft inconvenience package. English-language systems, apparently, get to sit this one out while everyone else gets their settings randomly stomped on like some intern went tap dancing across the registry.

To their credit—yes, I hate saying that—Microsoft has acknowledged the problem. They say they’re working on a fix, which in corporate speak means “we noticed the fire and are currently looking for a bucket.” In the meantime, affected users may have to manually reconfigure their mouse settings after installing the update, which is a fantastic use of everyone’s goddamn time.

The issue showed up after the August 2025 non-security preview update for Windows 11, and while it’s not exactly the end of civilization, it’s another shining example of how updates meant to “improve the user experience” often end up kicking it in the teeth instead. Nothing says modern software engineering like patching one thing and breaking another for a completely different group of users.

Microsoft hasn’t provided much beyond “yeah, it’s busted” and “we’re on it,” so for now the official workaround is basically to deal with the crap and wait. Splendid. Truly the polished, world-class update experience we’ve all come to expect from the people who can turn a simple mouse pointer into an international incident.

I remember a sysadmin once bragging that his environment was “fully standardized,” right before a patch reset every damned printer in three countries and made the help desk cry. Same energy here: one update, one stupid regional edge case, and suddenly everyone’s poking through settings menus like confused raccoons in a dumpster.
