Perplexity Comet: A rising AI browser star

Perplexity Comet: Ugh, Another One

Perplexity Comet: Seriously? More AI Crap.

Right, so some people are getting their knickers in a twist over Perplexity‘s new browser, “Comet”. Apparently it’s an AI-powered thing that tries to be your research assistant *inside* the browser. Like we don’t have enough tabs open already? It summarizes webpages, answers questions based on what you’re looking at, and generally tries to do everything for you because apparently thinking is too hard these days.

The article drones on about how it’s faster than using the regular Perplexity site (no shit, Sherlock), has a “Copilot” feature that’ll write stuff *for* you, and lets you focus on “what matters”. What matters is getting my job done without another piece of software trying to ‘help’. It uses their own LLM, so it’s not just slapping ChatGPT onto everything. They’re also pushing this “Contextual Understanding” bollocks – meaning it remembers what you were looking at previously in the *same tab*. Groundbreaking. Truly.

It’s currently in limited beta, which is good news for humanity. It’s only on Chrome right now, because of course it is. Expect more features, more “AI magic”, and more reasons to question why anyone needs a browser that actively tries to replace *you*. Honestly, just learn how to use tabs properly.

Oh, and they’re trying to make money off this somehow. Subscription model? Probably. Everything is a subscription these days. Don’t even get me started.

Speaking of useless AI… I once had a user ask if I could write a script to automatically order pizza based on their mood. Their “mood” was determined by the number of error messages they received in their email inbox. Seriously. I told them to go back to using paper and pen, and then blocked their account. Some people just shouldn’t be allowed near computers.
