Shipt becomes the latest delivery app with an AI shopping assistant

Shipt Jumps on the AI Shopping Bandwagon, Because Apparently We Needed Another Bloody Chatbot

So here we bloody go again: Shipt has become the latest delivery app to bolt an AI shopping assistant onto its service, because no modern tech company can apparently function without slapping “AI” on the side and calling it innovation. According to TechCrunch, Shipt’s new assistant is meant to help customers with the usual shopping nonsense — finding items, getting recommendations, and making the whole grocery-ordering process feel less like a chore and more like being politely stalked by an algorithm.

The pitch is the same tired corporate crap we’ve seen from everyone else: the AI is supposed to make shopping easier, faster, and more “personalized.” In other words, it watches what you buy, tries to guess what other overpriced crap you might want, and then serves it up with a cheerful digital grin. Because obviously what people were missing from grocery delivery was one more layer of machine-generated meddling between them and a carton of eggs.

Shipt says the assistant can help users discover products, answer shopping-related questions, and generally act like a helpful little retail goblin living inside the app. The idea is to keep up with competitors who’ve all decided that if they don’t have an AI assistant, investors might think they’ve fallen behind in the great industry-wide “who can automate the most pointless shit” competition.

To be fair — and I hate being fair — this kind of tool might actually help some people. If you’re trying to build a shopping list, find substitutions, or figure out what the hell to cook with whatever sad ingredients are left in your kitchen, an assistant like this could save a bit of time. But let’s not pretend this is some grand technological awakening. It’s grocery app optimization dressed up in AI glitter, and everyone’s expected to clap like trained bloody seals.

The bigger picture, of course, is that delivery apps are all scrambling to shove generative AI into every possible corner of their platforms. Search, recommendations, meal planning, product discovery — all of it is being handed over to bots because that’s where the hype money is. Shipt is just the latest fool to join the parade, waving its shiny new assistant around like it’s reinvented civilization instead of helping someone locate almond milk.

In summary: Shipt now has an AI shopping assistant. It helps with product search, suggestions, and shopping guidance, and it exists because every app executive in the known universe is terrified of being the one idiot at the table without an AI strategy. Useful? Maybe. Revolutionary? Oh, do fuck off.

Anecdote time: this reminds me of the time a manager proudly unveiled an “intelligent” helpdesk system that was supposed to reduce support tickets. What it actually did was route every bloody problem to the wrong department, send auto-replies at 3 a.m., and trap one poor bastard in an infinite password reset loop. We called it progress right up until someone pulled the plug. Same energy here.
