IT system supplier cyberattack impacts 200 municipalities in Sweden

Seriously? 200 Swedish Municipalities Hosed.

Oh, joy. Another ransomware attack. This time it’s Sweden getting their collective asses handed to them because some IT supplier – Visma – got pwned by a bunch of script kiddies (probably). Apparently, this one supplier handles *a lot* of stuff for 200 municipalities, meaning everything from payroll to who knows what else is now potentially compromised.

They’re saying it’s a ransomware thing, specifically targeting file servers. Shocking. Absolutely fucking shocking. Like, who thought centralizing EVERYTHING with one vendor was a good idea? It’s not like this hasn’t happened before, you know? Expect disruption to services, potential data leaks (because backups are apparently optional), and a whole lot of panicked IT people scrambling to do damage control. They’re “working on it” – which translates to “we have no clue what we’re doing but we’ll pretend to be busy.”

Visma is claiming they’ve contained the issue, but honestly? I’d believe that about as far as I can throw a server rack. The attackers are still in the process of extorting money from these poor bastards and it’s likely data *has* been stolen. The investigation is ongoing, which means more delays and finger-pointing.

Honestly, this whole thing just proves that people will never learn. Decentralize your systems, have proper backups, and for the love of all that is holy, don’t trust a single vendor with everything! It’s basic security hygiene, but apparently too much to ask.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I was tasked with cleaning up a mess at a small college. They used one single Access database for *everything* – student records, financial aid, cafeteria menus… you name it. One power surge later and the entire institution was crippled. The IT guy? He thought backups were “for people who make mistakes.” Yeah, well, guess what happens when your only copy of everything gets fried? I spent three weeks rebuilding that database from paper records. Don’t be like that IT guy. Seriously.
