Healthcare Services Group data breach impacts 624,000 people

Healthcare Services Group Data Breach – Ugh.

Another Fucking Data Breach. Seriously?

Right, so Healthcare Services Group (HSG), a company that handles billing and other crap for healthcare providers, got pwned. Like, really pwned. We’re talking 624,000 people having their personal information exposed. Names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers – the whole goddamn shebang.

Apparently, some unauthorized access happened between May and July of this year. They didn’t notice for a while, naturally. It took them until October to figure out what was going on, which is just… fantastic security practice, I tell ya. They’re sending notifications now, offering credit monitoring (like that fixes everything), and blaming it on some “cyberattack.” Surprise, surprise.

The usual suspects are involved: potential identity theft, fraud, the whole nine yards. Honestly, if your data is with these clowns, consider yourself warned. Change passwords, freeze your credit, and generally assume you’re screwed until proven otherwise. It’s not rocket science to secure this shit, but apparently it is for some companies.

And of course, they claim no ransomware was deployed. Oh goodie, just a straight-up data dump for maximum chaos. Wonderful.

Related Anecdote: I once had to rebuild a server farm because someone thought it was a good idea to label the backup tapes with *sticky notes*. Sticky notes! The humidity in that data center… let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. And you wonder why these breaches happen? Idiots, the lot of them.
