MATLAB dev says ransomware gang stole data of 10,000 people

Ugh, Another Data Breach

Seriously? MATLAB Now?!

Right, listen up. Some ransomware clowns – the Rhysida group, apparently they’re *so* original – managed to breach a developer working with MathWorks’ MATLAB software. And what did they do? Stole data on over 10,000 people. Ten THOUSAND. Names, addresses, emails…the usual crap you don’t want floating around the dark web.

The dev, whose name I won’t bother remembering, had a poorly secured cloud storage thingy. Like, seriously? You’re handling sensitive data and *this* is your security posture? Pathetic. They’re claiming it was all backups, which doesn’t make it any better, does it?

MathWorks says they’re investigating (like that helps now) and are notifying affected individuals. Rhysida’s already started leaking samples of the stolen data to prove their point – because extortion is apparently a legitimate business model these days. Fantastic.

Honestly, I’m starting to think everyone needs to just unplug from the internet entirely. It’s clearly not safe. And don’t even get me STARTED on the password reuse I bet happened here. Idiots. The whole lot of ’em.

Speaking of backups… I once had a sysadmin who thought “backup” meant copying files to a different folder on the *same* hard drive. When that drive died? Let’s just say there was yelling. A LOT of yelling. And then he wondered why his job security was suddenly questionable. Some people, honestly…
