Google is killing off Gemini’s Gems in favor of ‘skills’

Google Murders Gemini’s “Gems” and Rebrands the Same Bloody Mess as “Skills”

So here’s the latest load of corporate bullshit: Google is apparently killing off Gemini’s “Gems” and replacing them with something called “skills.” Because obviously the problem wasn’t the product itself — no, no — it was the name. Slap a new label on the same damn cupboard and pretend you’ve invented furniture. Classic big-tech clown behavior.

The article says Google is retiring Gems, which were basically customizable AI helpers users could set up for specific tasks. You know, little tailored assistants for doing focused jobs without having to explain the same crap over and over again. Now Google, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to fold that functionality into “skills,” which sounds like the sort of word a middle manager vomits into a slide deck after a two-hour branding workshop and three espressos.

The idea, as far as anyone can tell through the fog of marketing sewage, is that “skills” will handle those specialized functions in a broader, supposedly cleaner Gemini experience. Translation: they’re moving buttons around, renaming shit, and hoping users mistake the confusion for innovation. And because it’s Google, there’s every chance half the users will wake up one morning to find a feature they relied on has vanished into the same graveyard as Inbox, Stadia, and whatever other doomed pet project got strangled this quarter.

What makes this especially annoying is that Gems actually had a reasonably understandable purpose. You could create focused AI personas or helpers for repeat jobs. Fine. Not revolutionary, but at least it was concrete. “Skills,” on the other hand, sounds broader, fuzzier, and suspiciously like the kind of thing product teams use when they want to pretend removing a feature is actually an “evolution.” It’s not evolution, you overpaid muppets — it’s renaming the widget and hoping nobody notices the screws went missing.

TechCrunch’s piece points out this is part of Google’s ongoing effort to simplify Gemini and unify how its AI features work. Which, if you’ve suffered through enough platform migrations, usually means: fewer clear distinctions, more hidden functionality, and a support forum full of pissed-off users asking where the hell their old tools went. “Simplify” in enterprise dialect often means “we made it worse, but with cleaner icons.”

So the short version is this: Google is sunsetting Gems, rolling the concept into “skills,” and expecting everyone to nod along like this isn’t the same reheated slop in a shinier bowl. Maybe it’ll work better. Maybe it’ll be more flexible. Or maybe, as is so often the case, it’ll just give product managers a new noun to ruin while the rest of us clean up the fucking mess.

Anecdote time: this reminds me of a place where management renamed the server outage tracker to the “Service Availability Confidence Portal.” Same dumpster fire, same screaming users, same idiot VP insisting morale was up because the dashboard had softer colors. We still fixed it by rebooting the box and lying in the incident report. Some things never bloody change.
