Microsoft reverses Teams file-sharing override for federated chats

Microsoft Backs the Hell Down on Teams File Sharing Override

Right, so Microsoft pulled one of its usual stunts: it introduced a lovely little “feature” in Teams that would let file sharing in federated chats ignore SharePoint and OneDrive org-level external sharing settings. Because apparently if admins set policies, that’s just a fun suggestion, not an actual bloody rule. Predictably, people noticed this was a security and compliance shitshow waiting to happen.

The original idea was that Teams could override stricter SharePoint and OneDrive settings for federated one-to-one chats, which meant users might share files externally even when the broader Microsoft 365 environment was configured to say “no.” You know, the kind of thing that makes admins grind their teeth into dust while Microsoft calls it “improving collaboration.” Improving collaboration, my arse.

After enough backlash from people who actually have to keep environments secure, Microsoft reversed course. The company now says Teams file sharing in federated chats will respect the existing SharePoint and OneDrive external sharing settings after all. Amazing. A policy system that follows policy. What a revolutionary fucking concept.

That means if your organization has tighter controls in place for external sharing, Teams won’t get to swagger in like some half-drunk middle manager and bypass them. Admins keep the expected behavior, compliance teams can stop screaming into pillows, and users remain subject to the same sharing restrictions that were configured across the tenant in the first place.

The whole mess is a reminder of Microsoft’s favorite hobby: changing critical behavior in cloud services, announcing it with just enough vagueness to confuse everyone, then acting surprised when customers object to their security model being kicked in the shins. This reversal is the right move, but it’s also one of those fixes where they’re really just undoing their own bad idea before it detonates in production. So, not exactly a fucking triumph.

Bottom line: if you were worried that Teams federated chat file sharing was about to bypass your SharePoint and OneDrive external sharing rules, Microsoft has backed off. For now, the existing tenant-level controls still matter, which is how it bloody well should have been from the start.

Anecdote time: this reminds me of a place where management decided the firewall rules were “slowing innovation,” so they poked holes in it until the auditors arrived and half the office suddenly developed selective amnesia. Funny how “business agility” turns into “who the fuck approved this?” the moment someone important starts asking questions.
