Siri AI in Europe? Don’t Hold Your Fucking Breath Until 2027
Apparently Apple’s shiny new AI toys for Siri might not land on iPhones in the EU until 2027, because of course nothing involving Big Tech, regulators, and billion-dollar ego contests can ever happen without years of bureaucratic shit-flinging.
The basic mess is this: Apple has been rolling out its so-called “Apple Intelligence” features, including a supposedly smarter Siri, but EU users may be left sitting in the cold like the unwanted stepchildren of Cupertino. Why? Because Apple is pointing at the European Union’s Digital Markets Act and muttering darkly that the rules could force it to open up parts of its ecosystem in ways it doesn’t like. Translation: “We’d rather delay the feature than let anyone else touch our precious walled garden.”
The article says Apple is worried that interoperability requirements under the DMA could create privacy, security, and platform-control issues. That’s the public corporate version, anyway. The less polished version is that Apple likes controlling everything down to the last screw, and the EU keeps showing up with a clipboard and asking awkward questions. The result? European iPhone users may have to wait years for AI-enhanced Siri while everyone else gets to test whether the damn thing is actually useful or just another overhyped assistant that confidently serves you polished nonsense.
There’s also the usual irony baked into this clusterfuck: Apple constantly sells itself as the privacy saint of tech, and now it’s using that same privacy argument as part of the reason for slowing or withholding AI features in Europe. Maybe that concern is genuine. Maybe it’s also fantastically convenient. Funny how principles always seem to align perfectly with corporate leverage.
Meanwhile, competitors are shoving AI into everything with a screen, a battery, or a pulse. Microsoft, Google, and everyone else are cramming generative AI into their products whether users asked for it or not. Apple, meanwhile, is doing what Apple does best: arriving late, acting superior, and charging everyone a premium for the privilege. And now even that delayed arrival may be delayed again in the EU because the legal and technical pissing match hasn’t been sorted out.
So the summary is simple: Apple’s smarter Siri may miss EU iPhones until 2027 because of regulatory headaches under the DMA, Apple’s obsession with control, and the usual industry-wide parade of legal posturing and self-serving bullshit. EU users get to wait, Apple gets to complain, regulators get to regulate, and Siri remains only marginally less useless for a few more years.
I once saw a manager delay a critical server upgrade for eighteen months because he was “waiting for strategic alignment,” which turned out to mean hiding in meetings until the hardware practically caught fire. This smells exactly the same, just with more lawyers, more money, and shinier marketing slides.
