French Supermarkets Got Their Fridges Punched in the Face by a Cyberattack
Right, here’s the short version, because apparently even refrigerators need incident response now. A bunch of French Intermarché supermarkets got smacked by a cyberattack that knocked out store refrigeration systems, which is exactly the kind of modern bullshit you get when every damn compressor and thermostat has to be “smart.”
According to the report, the attack disrupted refrigerators in multiple stores, forcing staff to scramble while chilled and frozen goods sat there one power hiccup away from becoming expensive, lukewarm garbage. The company said the incident affected internal systems tied to refrigeration management, and yes, that’s every bit as stupid and fragile as it sounds.
The supermarkets reportedly had to isolate impacted systems and bring in technical teams to sort the mess out. Some stores had to close temporarily or limit operations while they dealt with the fallout. Because of course if you connect critical infrastructure to a network badly enough, some bastard eventually comes along and kicks it in the teeth.
The article says there’s no sign customer data was stolen, which is nice, I suppose, if your idea of success is “the hackers only broke the fridges instead of stealing your identity too.” Still, the real point is painfully obvious: operational tech and retail infrastructure are now tangled together so tightly that one cyberattack can turn a supermarket into a warm, blinking monument to managerial incompetence.
This whole fiasco is another reminder that when companies cheap out on segmentation, resilience, and security for connected systems, the result is not innovation. The result is spoiled food, disrupted stores, panicked employees, and executives making grave little statements about how seriously they take the situation after the shit has already hit the fan.
In other words: some idiot left the digital back door open, some other bastard walked through it, and now the lettuce is sweating. Magnificent work all around.
Anecdote time: years ago, I watched a manager insist the server room air conditioning be put on the same control system as the office lights because it was “more efficient.” Two weeks later, one bad change turned the place into a metal oven and cooked a storage array so thoroughly it probably qualified as a casserole. Same lesson, different frozen disaster: if you wire everything together like a drunken octopus, don’t act shocked when one failure screws the whole damn lot.
