Former Plaud Exec Bags $26M for a Creepy Little AI Eavesdropper, Because Apparently Privacy Was Having Too Good a Year
Right, so here’s the gist of this bullshit: a former Plaud executive has gone off and raised a chunky $26 million for an AI app that sits in the background listening to you all day like some needy, digital office goblin. The pitch, naturally, is that it’ll helpfully remember things for you, organize your life, and probably wipe your arse if the investors can slap “AI” on the toilet paper too.
The app’s whole deal is “ambient listening,” which is a charming bit of marketing-scented crap for “it’s always bloody listening.” Supposedly it captures conversations and context so it can generate notes, reminders, and useful little summaries. Because God forbid people use a notebook, or a brain, or even the miserable Notes app already rotting on their phone.
Investors, being the excitable magpies they are whenever someone whispers “AI” and “productivity” in the same sentence, hurled $26 million at it. That tells you less about the app being revolutionary and more about the venture capital industry being unable to walk past a shiny pile of speculative shit without trying to monetize it.
To be fair, this sort of thing does have obvious appeal: meetings, ideas, random to-dos, follow-ups, all vacuumed up while you bumble through your day pretending to be efficient. If it works well, people will call it indispensable. If it works badly, it’ll be another cursed transcription engine hallucinating action items and turning “call John” into “launch agricultural drone empire.”
And then there’s the tiny, insignificant, absolutely-not-terrifying issue of privacy. You know, the bit where an app lurks in the background slurping up speech and context like a surveillance gremlin with a Series A deck. The company will no doubt say all the reassuring things: consent, safeguards, controls, trust, security, blah blah fucking blah. But whenever a startup says “don’t worry, your data is safe,” I instinctively check whether my wallet’s still there.
So yes: ex-Plaud exec, big funding round, AI app that listens all the time, and a grand vision of making personal memory searchable and useful. Maybe it becomes the next must-have assistant. Maybe it becomes yet another overfunded privacy headache with a polished landing page and a lot of breathless bollocks about “human-AI collaboration.” Either way, somebody just got $26 million to make your phone even more of an invasive little shit.
Reminds me of a user who once asked me to “quietly monitor” a server for problems. So I did. For six months. Then I printed out every stupid thing he’d done, stapled it to his chair, and waited for the screaming. That’s what “background listening” turns into, eventually: evidence. Anyway, what the fuck do I know? I’m only the one paying attention.
