VS Code 1.142 adds a shared Kanban board for AI agents

VS Code 1.142 Gives AI Agents a Shared Kanban Board, Because Apparently Even the Bots Need More Bloody Meetings

Right, so Microsoft has shoved out VS Code 1.142, and the big shiny gimmick this time is a shared Kanban board for AI agents. Because obviously what the world was missing wasn’t faster code, fewer bugs, or less corporate nonsense — it was a little task board so a flock of digital busybodies can coordinate their crap in public.

The basic idea is that multiple AI agents working inside VS Code can now share a Kanban-style task list, so they can keep track of what’s being done, what’s waiting, and what’s presumably been broken already. It’s meant to improve coordination between agents handling different parts of a job. In other words, instead of one AI making a mess in isolation, now several of them can organize the mess together. Progress.

According to the article, this feature is tied into Microsoft’s ongoing push to make AI assistants and agent-based workflows feel like some sort of inevitable future. The shared board gives visibility into who’s doing what, which sounds lovely until you remember this is software development, where “visibility” usually means you get to watch the disaster unfold in real time.

There are also improvements around agent interaction and workflow management, because apparently the machines now need project management tooling too. Fantastic. Soon the AI will be asking for stand-ups, sprint retrospectives, and a bloody wellness day after refactoring a JavaScript file. If this keeps up, Clippy will be back wearing a Scrum Master badge.

The point, buried under the usual optimistic vendor fluff, is that Microsoft wants developers to trust AI agents with larger and more collaborative tasks inside the editor. The shared Kanban board is supposed to make that less opaque, more manageable, and maybe slightly less terrifying. Whether it actually helps or just adds another layer of shiny shit on top of existing complexity is, as ever, left as an exercise for the poor sod using it.

So yes: VS Code 1.142 adds a shared Kanban board for AI agents. If you’ve ever looked at software teams drowning in tickets, half-finished tasks, and passive-aggressive workflow columns and thought, “You know who should copy this? The robots,” then congratulations — this release is your Christmas.

Years ago, I watched a junior admin make a colour-coded task board for a printer migration. Very professional, very structured, very bloody proud of himself. Then he plugged the printers into the wrong VLAN and took out accounting for half a day. The board was immaculate. The network was fucked. That, in a nutshell, is how I feel about AI Kanban boards.
