Replit’s CEO Picks OpenAI for Coding, and Anthropic Gets to Eat Shit
Right, so here’s the gist of this little corporate pissing match: Replit CEO Amjad Masad says OpenAI is currently better than Anthropic when it comes to coding. Not “in every possible way forever,” not “Anthropic is useless,” just that for code generation and programming tasks, OpenAI is doing the better job right now. Which, naturally, is enough to get the AI fanboys clutching their pearls and acting like someone’s kicked their emotional support chatbot down the stairs.
Masad’s point seems to be based on actual use in a real coding product rather than the usual marketing diarrhoea vendors spray over everything. Replit, being a coding platform and not just a fancy slideshow generator, has to care whether the model can write useful code instead of confidently vomiting broken garbage into production. And according to him, OpenAI is delivering better results for that particular use case. Shocking, I know — a CEO choosing the tool that works best instead of the one with the prettiest manifesto.
The article also makes it clear this isn’t some total annihilation of Anthropic. Claude still has strengths, and these model comparisons shift all the damn time because the whole AI industry is basically a demolition derby run by sleep-deprived hype merchants. Today one model is king of the hill, tomorrow it faceplants into a ditch after an update. But for now, on coding, OpenAI apparently has the edge.
Another part of the story is what this says about the market: companies building products on top of AI models are getting more blunt about who performs and who doesn’t. That means less mystical “we love all frontier models equally” PR bullshit and more “this one writes decent code, that one screws up and wastes our time.” Frankly, that’s refreshing. If you’re shipping software, you don’t need philosophical purity — you need the bastard thing to work.
So the takeaway is simple: Replit’s boss prefers OpenAI for coding because, in his experience, it does the job better. Anthropic isn’t dead, doomed, or dragged behind the server rack and beaten with a power cable — it’s just not winning this round. That’s the whole bloody story. A practical decision, based on practical results, in an industry usually drowning in self-important nonsense. Miracles do happen.
As for me, this reminds me of the time a manager demanded we use the “more ethical” ticketing system instead of the one that actually worked. Three days later, the ethical piece of shit had lost half the incidents, duplicated the rest, and emailed the CEO at 3 a.m. about a printer jam. We switched back after I politely explained, with charts and profanity, that reliability beats ideology when the building’s on fire.
