Oh, Joy. Another Data Breach.
Right, listen up, you lot. Apparently, Chess.com – yes, that Chess.com – had a data breach. Not directly hacked, oh no, that’d be too straightforward. No, they used some third-party file transfer app (GoAnywhere MFT, for the record) which was riddled with holes bigger than my patience.
What got nicked? Email addresses, usernames… potentially hashed passwords if you were foolish enough to reuse them like a moron. They’re saying no financial info or “sensitive” game data was taken, but honestly, who trusts these guys now? They’ve been “investigating” since December 5th, so clearly security is top-notch over there.
The worst part? They don’t even know *exactly* how many accounts were affected. “A limited number” they say. Fantastic. Real reassuring. Just what we all want: vague assurances from a company that couldn’t secure its own digital backside. They’re pushing password resets, which is the bare minimum, frankly.
Seriously, if you use Chess.com (and why would you?), change your damn password *everywhere*. And for the love of all that is holy, stop reusing passwords! It’s like leaving your house key under the doormat and then being surprised when someone walks off with your TV.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I had a user who thought “password” was a perfectly acceptable password. I swear to you. Then they complained when their account got pwned by a script kiddie. Some people just *want* to be hacked, it’s infuriating.
