Outlook Search Gets “Better,” Because Apparently Five Results Wasn’t Enough
So Microsoft has decided to fiddle with Outlook search again, because apparently the endless rearranging of perfectly functional shit is what passes for innovation these days. The big news in this little circus is that Outlook search is expanding its top ranked results from five to seven. Yes, seven. Two whole extra results, because clearly that was the missing piece keeping humanity from inbox enlightenment.
The idea is that when you search in Outlook, you’ll now get up to seven so-called “most relevant” results at the top instead of five. Microsoft says this is supposed to improve discoverability and help you find what you need faster. Which, in fairness, might actually be useful if Outlook’s idea of relevance hasn’t already been huffing glue behind the server rack.
The less stupid change is the offline fallback feature. If Outlook can’t reach Microsoft Search services because your connection is down, flaky, or just being the usual corporate network dumpster fire, it will fall back to local search. In other words, when the cloud inevitably trips over its own shoelaces, Outlook will still try to dig through your cached mailbox instead of sitting there like a useless sack of shit. That part is actually sensible, which is suspicious enough on its own.
This means users should still be able to get search results while offline or when connectivity to Microsoft’s backend is broken. Of course, local results may not be as complete or as polished as cloud-powered search, because naturally the “premium experience” still depends on the mothership being awake. But at least you’re no longer completely screwed when the network gods decide to smite your VPN.
Microsoft is rolling this out to Outlook on the web and the new Outlook for Windows. So if you’re one of the lucky bastards stuck using classic Outlook, don’t go expecting miracles from Redmond just yet. As usual, the shiny new behavior lands where Microsoft wants people to go, whether they like it or not.
In short: Outlook search now shows seven ranked results instead of five, and if online search craps itself, local offline fallback should keep the whole thing from becoming totally useless. It’s not revolutionary, it’s not sexy, but it’s one of those rare changes that might save admins and users a bit of grief—assuming, of course, nothing else catches fire in the process.
Anecdote time: this reminds me of the time a manager screamed that email search was broken because he couldn’t find an attachment from “sometime last year.” Turned out he’d spelled the client name three different ways, filed half the mail in random folders, and then blamed the server. We fixed it the traditional way: by nodding politely while contemplating murder and adding more logging. Same shit, different decade.
