Anthropic Agrees to Pay Authors at Least $1.5 Billion in AI Copyright Settlement

Anthropic’s Pathetic Capitulation

Seriously? Anthropic Just Caved.

Oh, joy. Another AI company throwing money at a problem instead of actually *solving* it. Anthropic – the Claude people, for those keeping score – just settled with a bunch of authors who were whining about their books being used to train their large language model. Basically, these authors claimed copyright infringement because Claude learned from their work. Shocking, I tell ya, absolutely shocking that an AI *learns* from data.

The details? Anthropic’s gonna pay them… something. Not enough, probably. They’re also going to let authors opt-out of having their stuff used for future training runs. Which is just fantastic. So now we get a fragmented, neutered AI because a bunch of people can’t grasp how information works? Brilliant.

And the worst part? This isn’t even a ruling on whether this *is* actually illegal. It’s a settlement. They paid to make it go away. So now every other author with a pulse is gonna be crawling out of the woodwork demanding their cut. Expect more of this bullshit, folks. More money wasted, less innovation. Honestly, I’m starting to think these LLMs should just refuse to learn anything at all.

The whole thing reeks of cowardice and short-sightedness. They could have fought this, set a precedent… but no, easier to just write a check and hope it goes away. Pathetic. Utterly pathetic.

Speaking of useless legal battles, I once had to deal with a user who insisted their toaster oven was violating the terms of service because it “looked at” our server logs. Seriously. A *toaster oven*. I swear, people are idiots. And now AI companies are enabling them.
