What is Mistral AI? Everything to know about the OpenAI competitor

Mistral AI: Ugh, Another One

Mistral AI: Seriously? More LLMs?

Right, so some French company – Mistral AI, because apparently the world *needs* another Large Language Model (LLM) vendor. They’re trying to be the “European OpenAI,” which is just… ambitious, frankly. They started in 2023 and have already raised a boatload of cash from investors who clearly haven’t learned their lesson about throwing money at glorified text predictors.

Here’s the gist: they build open-weight models (meaning you can tinker with them, if you *really* want to waste your time) and closed-source ones accessible via API. They have a few models out now – Mistral 7B, Mixtral 8x7B, and the newer Large model which is supposedly competitive with GPT-4 but costs less. Surprise surprise.

They’re pushing hard on multilingual capabilities (because English isn’t enough, apparently) and are trying to position themselves as a privacy-focused alternative. Yeah, right. Everyone says that until they need more data for training. They also have a chat interface called Le Chat – original name, guys, *real* creative.

They’ve partnered with Microsoft Azure (of course) and are trying to get their models into everything. Basically, it’s the same song and dance as every other AI startup: build model, raise money, partner with big cloud provider, repeat until inevitable acquisition or flameout. Don’t expect anything revolutionary; just another player in the increasingly crowded LLM space.

Oh, and they’re trying to be “responsible” with their AI. Whatever that means. Probably just marketing fluff.

Look, I once had to debug a routing issue caused by a misconfigured BGP table on a Friday night. A *routing* issue. It took six hours and involved more caffeine than any human should consume. And now you’re telling me people are excited about slightly cheaper text generation? Get your priorities straight.
