Seriously? ChatGPT & Minecraft Servers – What a Fucking Disaster
Right, so OpenAI decided it was a *brilliant* idea to let ChatGPT play Minecraft. Because apparently solving actual problems wasn’t enough. They launched this “MCP Server” thing, letting users interact with AI agents in the game. Sounded like fun for five minutes until… surprise! It immediately got overrun by griefers and exploiters. Shocking, I tell you. Shocking.
Turns out, securing a Minecraft server against determined assholes is harder than OpenAI thought. Who could have predicted that letting the internet near something requires… security? They had to shut it down after less than a day because people were abusing the system faster than they could patch it. They’re “pausing” it now, which means ‘we haven’t got a clue how to fix this mess’.
The article basically details how OpenAI is consistently failing at basic operational security while simultaneously pretending to be on the cusp of AGI. It’s less “cutting edge AI” and more “expensive toy that breaks if you look at it funny”. And, naturally, they blame the users for being… resourceful? Fucking typical.
Honestly, I’m starting to think their entire business model is based on generating hype and then quietly shelving things when reality sets in. Don’t expect this to be back anytime soon, or ever.
Related anecdote: Back in ’98, some bright spark thought it would be a good idea to let users upload custom avatars to our BBS. Lasted about three hours before the entire thing was filled with… well, things you wouldn’t show your grandmother. Some lessons never change, apparently.
