Seriously? Penske Sues Google Over Summaries. *Again*.
Oh, for the love of all that is holy… another media company throwing a tantrum because their content is being summarized by an AI. This time it’s Penske Media (Rolling Stone, Billboard, Variety – yeah, those guys) suing Google. Apparently, Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is the problem, because it dares to give people *brief* overviews of articles instead of forcing them to click through a million ads on their websites.
They’re claiming copyright infringement and basically saying Google is stealing their work. Stealing? Seriously?! It’s called fair use, you goddamn vultures! They want Google to pay up for using snippets – snippets that *drive traffic* to their sites, might I add. The audacity of these people is astounding.
Penske isn’t alone in this idiocy; News Corp already started a similar fight. It’s all about money, pure and simple. They didn’t bother building good AI themselves, so now they want to leech off Google’s investment. Expect more of these lawsuits as every media outlet realizes they can try and shake down tech companies for cash instead of innovating.
Honestly, if your content isn’t worth reading in full, maybe you should rethink your entire business model. Just a thought. A very, *very* frustrated thought.

Look, I once had to debug a routing protocol issue caused by a misconfigured Cisco router. The engineer *swore* it was a software bug. Turned out he’d typed “show ip route” instead of “show ip routes”. Plural. Plural! These media execs are about as competent as that guy, and just as likely to blame everyone else for their own failings.
