Google and PayPal team up on agentic commerce

Google & PayPal: Another Fucking Partnership

Oh, Joy. Google and PayPal Are “Innovating” Again.

Right, so apparently the geniuses at Google and PayPal have decided we *need* more AI shopping bots running around doing our bidding. They’re calling it “agentic commerce” – which is just marketing bullshit for letting an algorithm spend your money. Basically, you tell Google what you want (vaguely, I presume, because that’s all anyone ever does), and PayPal handles the actual payment part. Like we didn’t have enough ways to lose control of our finances already.

The whole thing is built on Gemini 1.5 Pro, so expect it to be as reliable as a politician’s promise. They’re starting with travel planning (because *that* hasn’t been automated into a complete disaster yet) and then moving onto… well, everything else, naturally. Expect “seamless” experiences that will inevitably involve endless troubleshooting and phantom charges.

They’re also trying to spin this as good for merchants because it’ll supposedly drive more sales. Yeah, right. More sales *for Google and PayPal*, you mean. Don’t get me started on the data privacy implications. Seriously, do we really want these two tracking every single impulse buy? I didn’t think so.

It launches in the US “soon”. Prepare for disappointment. And probably fraud. Lots of fraud.

Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I automated a coffee machine for a user who wanted “perfect” java. Ended up flooding the breakroom with lukewarm sludge every morning at 3 AM because he couldn’t articulate what “perfect” meant beyond “not bad.” This Google/PayPal thing? Same energy. Just more expensive and likely to ruin your credit score.
