VMware Converter Standalone 9.0 – Ugh.

VMware Converter Standalone 9.0 – A Summary (Because I Have To)

Right, so VMware *finally* updated Converter Standalone to version 9.0. Big whoop. Apparently, they’ve added support for newer versions of ESXi and vCenter – shocking, isn’t it? Like, you expect software to work with current stuff, right? It now handles ESXi 8.0 U3 and vCenter 7.0 U3c. Groundbreaking.

They’ve also thrown in some improvements for cloning VMs from vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) – which is great if you’re one of those people who likes extra layers of complexity. And, because everything needs to be more complicated these days, they’ve added a “thin disk pre-allocation” option during conversion. Fantastic. More choices to screw up your storage with.

Oh, and they claim better performance for some conversions. Yeah, right. I’ll believe that when I see it. They also fixed a bunch of bugs – which is the bare minimum, frankly. It’s not like they *intended* to release broken software in the first place… or did they?

Basically, if you absolutely *have* to use this ancient piece of kit because your management refuses to spend money on proper migration tools, then update. If not? Stay far, FAR away. Seriously.

Related Anecdote: I once had a sysadmin try to convert a 500GB VM with this thing over a dodgy WiFi connection. It took three days. *Three days*. He then complained it was slow. Some people, honestly… It’s like watching a toddler operate heavy machinery.
