Plastic People, Plastic Cards: Synthetic Identities Plague Finance & Lending Sector

Synthetic Identity Fraud – Ugh.

Seriously? *Still* With This Shit?

Alright, listen up. Because apparently some people need it spelled out in crayon. The finance and lending sector is getting absolutely hammered by synthetic identity fraud. What’s that you ask? It’s when assholes create fake identities – using totally bogus Social Security numbers and names – to open accounts and rack up debt. Shocking, I know.

The article whines about how this is a multi-billion dollar problem (like we didn’t already have enough problems, right?), and it’s getting worse because of the sheer volume of data breaches constantly happening. More data = easier to build these goddamn fake personas. They’re using machine learning now too – *machine learning*! Like the bad guys aren’t already doing that? It’s a friggin’ arms race, and guess who’s losing? Everyone except the scammers.

Apparently, traditional fraud detection is useless against this crap because these identities don’t have existing histories. So banks are scrambling to implement new solutions – more AI (great), better data sharing (good luck with *that* privacy nightmare), and trying to figure out who the actual humans behind these fake accounts are. They’re talking about “behavioral biometrics” now, which basically means watching how people type and click. Like that’s going to stop a determined criminal.

The bottom line? This isn’t going away anytime soon. It’s expensive, it’s complex, and frankly, I’m tired of hearing about it. Fix your security, you morons! And maybe don’t hand out loans like candy.

I once had to clean up a mess where some idiot thought it was a good idea to use sequential numbers for test accounts. Guess what happened? A bot found them and started applying for loans. Seriously, people. Sequential numbers. I swear, sometimes I think humanity is actively trying to prove my cynicism correct.
