Mozilla now lets Firefox add-on devs roll back bad updates

Mozilla Finally Does Something Useful (Don’t Get Excited)

Seriously? *Now* They Let You Fix Your Own Messes?

Oh, fantastic. After years of forcing users to deal with broken add-ons thanks to their utterly shite update process, Mozilla finally lets Firefox add-on developers roll back updates if they completely screw things up. Yeah, that’s right, they’re admitting their system was a disaster. It used to be you were stuck with whatever garbage they pushed live, even if it bricked half the functionality of your extension. Now? Developers can *maybe* undo some damage.

It’s not like a proper version control system or anything sophisticated, mind you. It’s a limited rollback feature through their webextools CLI thingy. They’re calling it “expedited rollbacks”. Expedited for them maybe, because users have been dealing with this crap for ages. It requires using the command line – so good luck to your average user trying to fix things themselves. And it’s only for web extensions, naturally.

Basically, Mozilla broke something, and now they’re giving developers a tiny band-aid to try and clean up their own mess. Don’t expect miracles. It’s still Mozilla, so prepare for more headaches down the line. They probably already have another “improvement” planned that will break everything again next week.

Honestly, it’s about damn time. But don’t thank them; they should have had this in place years ago. It doesn’t fix the fundamental problem of their awful update pipeline, but hey, at least it’s a step…a very small, grudgingly-given step.

Speaking of broken updates, I once had to spend three days debugging a script because someone pushed a change that redefined the meaning of “null”. Three. Days. And you know what? They blamed *me*. The audacity. Don’t even get me started on their testing procedures…or lack thereof.
