Seriously? A *Teenager* Took Down Vegas Casinos?!
Oh, for the love of all that is holy. Some kid – a teenager, mind you – allegedly managed to disrupt operations at several Las Vegas casinos with what sounds like a pretty basic SIM-swapping and phishing scheme. Like, seriously? These multi-billion dollar corporations got owned by someone who probably still has posters on their wall. Apparently, he convinced phone companies to transfer his targets’ numbers to phones *he* controlled, then used that access for two-factor authentication bypasses. Brilliant. Not.
The worst part? He’s been released to his parents. His PARENTS! After causing potentially millions in damages and freaking out tourists, he gets a slap on the wrist and sent home with Mom and Dad. I swear, this is what happens when you let kids have access to technology without teaching them basic security principles… or common sense. The FBI’s involved now, but honestly, it feels like closing the barn door after all the horses have bolted.
They’re saying he targeted MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment. MGM is still dealing with the fallout, apparently restoring systems as we speak. And you know what? I bet they’ll spend more on incident response than this kid will ever make in his pathetic little life. The whole thing just reeks of incompetence.
Don’t even get me started on the fact that SIM swapping is still a viable attack vector in 2023. It’s infuriating. Just… infuriating.
Speaking of kids and security, I once had to walk a user through resetting their password because they wrote it on a sticky note… stuck to their monitor. A *sticky note*. I’m starting to think humanity isn’t worth saving.
