Because apparently, EU regulators threatened them with something unpleasant. Don’t mistake this for generosity; it’s pure damage control after getting called out on anti-competitive bullshit.

Basically, they got dinged for making it too hard to *not* upgrade and are now bending over backwards (for Europeans only, mind you) to avoid further fines. They’re extending security updates until October 2025 – a whole two years after the official end-of-life date. Two years!
