Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 extended security updates in Europe

Microsoft’s Pathetic Capitulation

Oh, *Now* They Care: Free Windows 10 Updates for Europe

Right. So Microsoft, after years of shoving people towards Windows 11 and letting perfectly functional systems rot with End-of-Life notices, has decided to offer free security updates for Windows 10… but only in EUROPE. Because apparently, EU regulators threatened them with something unpleasant. Don’t mistake this for generosity; it’s pure damage control after getting called out on anti-competitive bullshit.

Basically, they got dinged for making it too hard to *not* upgrade and are now bending over backwards (for Europeans only, mind you) to avoid further fines. They’re extending security updates until October 2025 – a whole two years after the official end-of-life date. Two years! Like that somehow makes up for all the planned obsolescence they’ve been peddling.

This isn’t about keeping users safe; it’s about appeasing regulators and avoiding bigger headaches. Don’t expect this kindness to spread beyond Europe, either. The rest of us can just eat shit and buy a new OS, apparently. It’s all about the money, as always.

And yes, they’ll be charging for extended support if you want it *after* October 2025. Because of course they will. They wouldn’t let a good revenue stream go to waste.

Reminds me of the time a user insisted on running Windows XP “because it just *works*.” Two years later, they got ransomware. “But I didn’t need to upgrade!” they whined. Yeah, well, neither did the Titanic need a bigger lifeboat fleet, but here we are. Some people learn the hard way, and Microsoft is counting on that.
