Microsoft Edge to block malicious sideloaded extensions

Microsoft Edge is Finally Doing Something Useful (Maybe)

Oh, Joy. Microsoft Edge Will *Now* Block Bad Extensions.

Right, so apparently some people were actually using the ability to sideload extensions in Microsoft Edge. Like willingly inviting trouble into their systems. Idiots. Anyway, Microsoft is finally getting around to blocking malicious ones. Took them long enough.

They’re rolling out a new system that checks these dodgy extensions against a list of known bad actors and, shockingly, will prevent installation if it finds something nasty. It’s a multi-phase thing, naturally. First they’ll block the really obvious crap, then move onto more subtle stuff. Because apparently security is a *process*, not a basic requirement.

The whole point of this is to stop attackers from distributing malware through fake ad blockers and other “helpful” extensions. Like people can’t tell a legitimate extension from one that wants all their data? Seriously?

They’re also trying to make it harder for these things to even *run* if they somehow slip past the initial checks, using virtualization or something equally complicated. Honestly, just don’t sideload random crap and you won’t have this problem. It’s not rocket science.

And of course, there’s a whole Enterprise side to this with policies and whatnot. Because everything has to be more complex for businesses. Ugh.

Speaking of people doing stupid things with software, I once had a user try to install a “free PDF converter” that was bundled with seven different toolbars and a browser hijacker. When I pointed out the obvious malware, they said, “But it was free!” I swear, some people actively *seek* out ways to ruin their day. Don’t be that person.
