Seriously? SAP, *Still* This Shit?
Oh, joy. More corporate bullshit. Apparently, the European Union is finally poking around at SAP because they’re being accused of strong-arming customers into using their overpriced support services for their ERP systems. Like we didn’t already know that. They’re allegedly making it a massive pain in the ass to use third-party support – think deliberately crippling functionality, refusing to cooperate with independent providers, and generally acting like a monopolistic twat.
The EU thinks this is anti-competitive, which, shockingly, it *is*. They’re worried SAP’s locking people into expensive contracts and stifling innovation. Big surprise. They launched a formal investigation, meaning paperwork and lawyers will be involved for the next decade, probably resulting in a slap on the wrist fine that SAP already factored into their quarterly earnings.
Basically, if you use SAP, you’re screwed unless you pay through the nose. And now the EU is pretending to care. Don’t hold your breath waiting for real change.
Honestly, it’s just… infuriating. These companies think they can do whatever they want because they’re “too big to fail.”
Related Anecdote: Back in ’98, I had a user call me screaming about an SAP module failing after a perfectly standard OS patch. Turns out, SAP “didn’t support” that particular patch *yet*. Translation? They hadn’t bothered to test it and were holding the customer hostage until they could sell them another “critical update package.” I spent three hours reverse-engineering their workaround just so the accounting department wouldn’t have a complete meltdown. The level of planned obsolescence… it still keeps me up at night.
