OpenAI’s Latest: Because Apparently Adults Can’t Be Trusted
Right, so OpenAI, in their infinite wisdom (and by ‘wisdom’ I mean desperate attempt to avoid another PR disaster), have slapped a “safety routing system” and parental controls onto ChatGPT. Basically, they’re admitting their AI still spews garbage sometimes, but instead of *fixing* the damn thing, they’re building layers of restriction. Fantastic.
What does this mean? Well, now you can set content filters – surprise! – to limit what ChatGPT will even attempt to answer. They’ve got categories like “violence,” “self-harm,” and the ever-popular “sexual content.” Groundbreaking stuff, truly. They’re also trying to detect if a user is a kid (good luck with *that*), and shunt them into a ‘safer’ mode. It’s all very hand-wavy about how well this works.
And of course, it’s all tied to your OpenAI account now. Because data collection isn’t creepy enough already, right? They want to know everything you and little Timmy are asking the AI so they can ‘improve’ things. Which means more censorship, probably. It also has a “custom mode” for those who want even *more* control – because clearly, the default restrictions weren’t suffocating enough.
Honestly? This is just a band-aid on a gaping wound. They should be focusing on making the AI less prone to hallucinating and generating harmful responses in the first place, not building a digital cage around it. But hey, easier to blame the users than actually solve the problem, isn’t it?
Don’t expect miracles. Expect more frustration, more limitations, and probably still plenty of weirdness slipping through the cracks. I give it two weeks before someone finds a way to bypass all this nonsense anyway.

Related Anecdote (Because You People Need Context)
I once had to deal with a sysadmin who insisted on installing every single piece of ‘security’ software imaginable. The network ground to a halt, performance was abysmal, and it *still* got compromised. Turns out, layering security doesn’t fix fundamental flaws; it just creates more layers for the attackers to peel back. This OpenAI thing? Same damn principle. Just adding crap on top of crap.
