[Dark Reading Virtual Event] Know Your Enemy: How cybercriminals and nation-state hackers operate

Ugh. Another Security “Event” Summary

Seriously? You Want *Me* To Summarize This Crap?

Fine, whatever. Apparently, some people need to be told how hackers work. Like it’s not obvious. The Dark Reading virtual event – because who has time for actual security when you can watch a webinar? – basically rehashed the painfully predictable: cybercriminals are motivated by money (shocking!), nation-states want…stuff. Political advantage, espionage, generally being dicks.

They talked about initial access brokers selling compromised systems like used cars, ransomware gangs being “professional” (yeah, right), and how phishing is still the goddamn plague of the internet. Like we didn’t already know that! They also droned on about supply chain attacks – because if you haven’t been warned about those enough times, I guess they figure one more time won’t hurt.

The “nation-state” part was even less insightful. APTs are persistent, sophisticated, and use custom malware. Groundbreaking stuff. They also mentioned living off the land techniques – which is just fancy talk for using tools your sysadmins already have to avoid detection. It’s all about blending in, apparently. Like a chameleon wearing a neon sign.

The whole thing boils down to: patch your shit, train your users (good luck with *that*), and assume you’re already compromised. Oh, and spend more money on security tools because that always fixes everything. It’s the same song and dance, just repackaged for people who apparently need a PowerPoint presentation to understand basic risk management.

Honestly, it’s insulting. But hey, at least they acknowledged that attribution is a nightmare. That’s one truth in this sea of useless information.

Related Anecdote: I once had to explain to a “security professional” why using Telnet for remote access was a bad idea. He argued it was “faster.” Faster to get owned, maybe. Some people just *want* to be hacked, I swear.
